All about aromatherapy bottles

Aromatherapy bottles should be made from dark glass to protect the oil from being damaged by light.  Plastic bottles are not suitable for long term storage, as pure essential oils are very concentrated and can cause the plastic to dissolve, thus contaminating the oil and impeding it's natural benefits.  Essential oil bottles should be kept safely out of reach of children, because aromatherapy oils are very powerful and should only be used in tiny amounts and never taken internally.  Because aromatic plant essences are volatile liquids, they will evaporate when they come into contact with the air, so bottle tops should always be tightly shut.

Aromatherapy bottles come in various sizes, the most commonly available being 10ml and 20ml.  They can be purchased from some shops and many online stores.  Empty bottles are useful to have on hand when making an aromatherapy blend.  A few drops of the chosen oils should be added first and swished around in the bottle before being diluted with a carrier oil.  Essential oil blends will keep for up to three months if stored in a refrigerator or other cool place.  Aromatherapists recommend buying small quantities of oils as they are needed, although most therapeutic grade essential oils, apart from citrus oils, will keep for up to two years.

The labels on aromatherapy bottles should be a useful indication of the purity and quality of the oil.  Stores selling aromatherapy supplies should be able to provide evidence of the standards of their oils.  Gas chromatography is used to test whether the characteristic signature of an oil is found.  The word "natural" on a label does not guarantee the oils is pure and unadulterated. Bottles of organic essential oils should show a symbol of organic certification form a recognized regulatory body to ensure the origins and methods of production.  There are lots of reputable suppliers of aromatherapy products online.
