How aromatherapy carrier oils are used in skin care products
Aromatherapy carrier oils are used to dilute pure essential oils so they can be safely applied to the skin. A carrier oil is used as a base because aromatic plant essences are so concentrated they can cause adverse reactions if put directly onto the skin. Exceptions to this rule are tea tree and lavender oil, which can be used neat to treat spots, bites or stings. Aromatherapy massage oil is made with a base oil, and the carrier oils themselves can have beneficial effects when rubbed into the skin. Aromatherapists generally use blends of 10-20 drops of therapeutic essential oil to 30ml of carrier oil.
Various types of aromatherapy carrier oils can be used, as long as they are cold pressed vegetable oils that don't impair the aroma of the essential oils. Sweet almond oil is a widely available and affordable carrier oil, which can be used as a base in a variety of different products. More expensive, but easily absorbed by the skin, without leaving a greasy feeling, is jojoba oil. Grapeseed oil is also used in a lot of aromatherapy skin care products, though this has to be stored in a cool dark place as it is prone to go rancid fairly quickly.
Other oils used for carrying aromatherapy oils to the skin include sunflower, olive and hazelnut. When using aromatherapy massage oils, only a small amount is needed, and for best results this must be rubbed in evenly and allowed time to be absorbed. Care must be taken not to get oily stains on clothes. Applying aromatherapy essential oils to the skin via a carrier oil can have many beneficial effects for both the body and mind, depending on the aromas chosen. Face creams, body oils and bath products are all nice ideas for aromatherapy gifts, and there are some great products made from high quality essential oils online.
