What are aromatherapy oils and how do they work?
Aromatherapy oils are concentrated liquids that have been extracted from certain aromatic plants and contain therapeutic healing qualities. Aromatherapy essential oils are literally pure plant essences. They are usually obtained via steam or water distillation, or by solvent extraction in the case of absolutes. Pure and organic essential oils have a powerful fragrance. When the aroma molecules are inhaled or absorbed through the skin they stimulate a reaction in the brain and can help ease the symptoms of various physical and emotional disorders.
Organic aromatherapy oils are believed by many aromatherapists to be superior in quality and purity to oils from conventionally grown plants. There are several simple ways to use aromatic oils in the home. Vaporizing oils is a good way to release their aromas. Diffusers such as aromatherapy oil burners, light bulb rings or porous clay pots, are inexpensive and easy to use. Scented aromatherapy candles made from a variety of essential oil blends are widely available. Products such as these not only soothe the body and mind, but can be used as natural air fresheners.
Pure aromatherapy oils can cause adverse reactions if applied neat to the skin, so aromatherapists used plant based carrier oils to dilute them before applying to the body. Aromatherapy massage oils, bath products and face creams are made in this way. Many high quality essential oils can be used in a bath to maximize their healing effects. 4-6 drops of an undiluted aromatic oil added to warm bath water are generally all that is needed. The aroma molecules can then be inhaled in the steam and soaked into the skin via osmosis. There are loads of stores selling individual bottles of oils and aromatherapy gifts online.
