Basil essential oils - Natural and powerful!

Basil essential oils can be used to treat a range of physical symptoms and to promote emotional well being.  Basil oil, known in Latin as ocimum basilicum, has a sharp, fiery aroma that smells a bit like aniseed.  It's a warm, powerful, herbaceous fragrance and should be use sparingly.  Aromatherapists recommend basil essential oil should never be used during pregnancy, and it should never be used excessively.  Used in aromatherapy oil burners or other types of diffusers, this aromatic oil can stimulate the mind and be used in healing certain physical conditions.

Basil pure essential oil can work psychologically to aid concentration, induce feelings of assertiveness and decisiveness, emotional strength and clarity.  Basil aromatherapy oils are often used in blends with other aromatic oils, including sage, lavender, bergamot and geranium oil.  Used in inhalation, basil releases its aroma molecules, which can help soothe symptoms of colds, flu and coughs.  This aromatic plant essence is also used by aromatherapists to ease aching muscles, gout and rheumatism.

In common with certain other therapeutic essential oils, including citronella and lemongrass, basil has natural insect repellent qualities.  Additionally, it can be used as a tonic for the digestive system and can help alleviate flatulence. Basil also has emmenagogue capabilities, meaning it can be used to induce and regularize menstruation.  Basil is widely available from stores selling aromatherapy supplies and essential oils online.
