Basil oil - A rich and fiery natural remedy!

Basil oil, Latin name ocimum basilicum, has a sharp herbaceous fragrance and powerful therapeutic properties.  This aromatic plant oil has a rich, warm, peppery scent that is slightly reminiscent of licorice.  Aromatherapists use basil essential oils in both physical and emotional healing to promote well being.  However, basil aromatherapy oil should always be used sparingly and with caution as it is very concentrated.  It should be avoided all together during pregnancy.

Pure basil oil has restorative qualities.  Used in aromatherapy diffusers, basil's aroma molecules can be inhaled into the body for their theraputic benefits to take effect.  Basil essential oil can be used to ease the physical symptoms of coughs, colds and flu.  It can also be good for treating tired or aching muscles and the discomfort of rheumatism or gout.  Like several aromatherapy essential oils, basil can be used by women to help induce and regularize menstruation.

The stimulating aromas of basil oil can also be used psychologically.  This aromatic plant essence can be used in emotional healing to encourage decisiveness, assertiveness and clarity of thoughts.  It is also used as an aid to concentration.  In recipes it can be used in essential oil blends with other oils, including bergamot, geranium, lavender and sage essential oil.  It can cause skin irritation, so should either be well diluted in a carrier oil or avoided altogether in skin care products, including massage oils and aromatherapy bath salt.
