Clove oil - A natural pain reliever

Clove oil has many therapeutic qualities, making it a useful oil to have on standby in a natural first aid kit.  Clove essential oil, Latin name eugenia caryophyllata, has a strong spicy fragrance.  Made from buds of cloves, it has a rich, powerful aroma and can be used in aromatherapy oil burners to create a warm, soothing atmosphere in a room.  Oil of clove is commonly used in Christmas essential oil blends with other seasonal oils, including mandarin, nutmeg and cinnamon bark oil to use as a natural air freshener, which can be added to light bulb rings and other types of aromatherapy diffusers.

Pure clove oil has natural analgesic qualities, which means it can be useful in reducing the sensation of pain.  Aromatherapists use this therapeutic grade essential oil to ease the symptoms of arthritis, rheumatism and toothache.  When inhaled, the aroma molecules in clove bud oil can help soothe certain respiratory conditions, including asthma and bronchitis.  Like many aromatherapy essential oils, clove has spiritual benefits.  It can be used to stimulate the mind and inspire, as well as providing a feeling of inner warmth.

Other aromatherapy benefits of clove oil include its ability to have carminative effects on the body, helping in alleviating abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence.  Along with some other high quality essential oils, oil extracted from cloves can have anti-infectious and anti-spasmodic properties.  It can cause irritation if applied to the skin, and aromatherapists caution that this aromatic plant essence should not be used at all during pregnancy.
