Frankincense essential oil - A rich fragrance to soothe the mind and heal the body

Frankincense essential oil, also known by its Latin name boswellia carterii, has been used throughout history for its many therapeutic effects on physical and emotional well being.  Frankincense is a very pungent resin that comes from the sap of an exotic gum tree.  This powerful aromatherapy oil has a rich stimulating fragrance with anti-depressant properties.  Psychologically, frankincense can be used to clear the mind and to help dissipate negative feelings of fear or unworthiness.

When inhaled, the aroma molecules from frankincense oil can help induce a feeling of calm, reducing anxiety and relieving tension headaches.  Used in an aromatherapy diffuser, this pure essential oil can be used for it's expectorant qualities to relieve the symptoms of various respiratory conditions, including catarrh, coughs and colds.  Diluted with a carrier oil it can be rubbed on the chest to ease chest infections.  Aromatherapists also use frankincense to treat a number of other physical symptoms, including cystitis, hemorrhoids and menstrual complaints.

Frankincense essential oil is also used in skin care products, such as face creams, body lotions and aromatherapy massage oils.  It's believed to have toning, replenishing and rejuvenating effects on aging skin and wrinkles.  Frankincense's healing qualities can be used on scarred tissue, stretch marks and to help heal wounds.  Like many aromatherapy essential oils, frankincense is highly concentrated.  It should never be taken internally and must be well diluted if used on an aromatherapy massage oil or other skincare preparation.  Aromatherapists recommend that this therapeutic grade essential oil is avoided during at least the first 3 months of pregnancy.
