Frankincense oil - An ancient and powerful natural remedy

Frankincense oil, botanical name boswellia carterii, has been used throughout history, both as a natural remedy for various physical complaints and in spiritual practices for its effect on stimulating the mind.  Frankincense essential oil or resin comes from the sap of an exotic gum tree, and it has a rich, warming aroma.  Evaporated in aromatherapy diffusers or oil burners, the aroma molecules in frankincense can have a calming effect on the mind, reducing anxiety and promoting sleep.  This aromatherapy oil has anti-depressant qualities and can be used to help get rid of feelings of fear or unworthiness.

The powerful fragrance of frankincense oil is also good for soothing the symptoms of sore throats, coughs , colds and chest infections.  Aromatherapists also use this therapeutic grade essential oil to treat certain menstrual problems, cystitis, hemorrhoids and nosebleeds.  Frankincense is toxic if used internally and as it is very pungent it should only ever be used in small doses, and like most essential oils should be well diluted in a carrier oil if being used in a skin care product.  Aromatherapists advise pregnant women to avoid this particular oil in the first three months of pregnancy.

Frankincense pure essential oil has replenishing and wound healing qualities that make it beneficial for rejuvenating the skin.  Diluted in an aromatherapy massage oil it can be used on stretch marks and scarred tissue.  In a face cream it has toning and purifying properties to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and aging skin.  Added to an aromatherapy jar candle, the fragrant aroma of frankincense oil can be a natural air freshener in a room, and its mild sedative effects can help dissipate tension headaches and bring a feeling of peace and serenity to the home.
