How can geranium oil be used as a natural remedy?

Geranium oil, also known by its Latin botanical name pelargonium graveolens, has mild sedative properties and is used by aromatherapists to treat a variety of emotional problems and stress induced conditions.  Geranium essential oil can have therapeutic effects on people suffering from psychological conditions such as anxiety, mood swings and feelings of apathy.  Geranium has a sweet, floral fragrance that is popular in essential oil blends for use in diffusers and in skin care products.

Geranium oil can sometimes cause irritation in sensitive skins, so plant based carrier oils are used to dilute a few drops of this aromatic oil to make it safe to apply to the body.  Geranium pure essential oil has astringent and anti-inflammatory abilities, so it is a common ingredient is natural remedies for acne, oily complexions and blocked pores.  It is also used in aromatherapy recipes for relieving dermatitis and eczema.  This aromatherapy oil has antiseptic properties and can be used in a carrier oil to promote wound healing.  The powerful aroma molecules also help repel mosquitoes and head lice.

This therapeutic grade essential oil can have healing benefits when added to warm bath water or blended in aromatherapy massage oils.  Geranium is used by aromatherapists for a variety of hormonal related complaints, including symptoms of PMS such as swollen breasts and fluid retention, and menopausal hot flushes, as well as postnatal depression.  Geranium oil can also soothe sore throats, stimulate poor circulation and ease the discomfort of cystitis and arthritis.  This particular fragrance is not recommended for use during the first three months of pregnancy or at all if there's a history of miscarriage.
