How to use juniper oil to promote well being

Juniper oil, Latin name juniperus communis, is a pure essential oil extracted from berries of the juniper plant and has many aromatherapy benefits.  Juniper has a warm, fruity, woody fragrance.  When vaporized in a diffuser or used in skin care products, the aroma molecules have a number of theraputic qualities for the body and mind.  Aromatherapists caution home users to be careful when buying this aromatic plant oil and to read the ingredients to check the purity as juniper oils are sometimes adulterated with turpentine.  Some discount essential oils are made from juniper wood, needles or even fermented berries that are a byproduct of gin making.  These won't be as high quality as an oil made from fresh berries.

Juniper oil has natural purifying and detoxifying properties, as well as being a diuretic.  It can be used in aromatherapy massage oils to stimulate the circulation, ease fluid retention and improve the appearance of cellulite.  Juniper essential oil can also be effective at soothing aching joints and muscles, and relieving rheumatic pains.  A few drops added to hot bath water can help alleviate menstrual cramps, cystitis, indigestion and flatulence.  Diluted in carrier oils, it can be used on the hair to treat greasy hair, dandruff and hair loss.  This aromatherapy oil can also be beneficial for oily skin, acne, eczema and blackheads.

Juniper oil can also be vaporized in aromatherapy diffusers, such as a nebulizer, oil burner or porous clay pot.  Its warming fragrance can soothe frayed nerves, reducing anxiety and insomnia.  When inhaled, the aromas of juniper can be used to help lower blood pressure and combat colds and flu.  This therapeutic grade essential oil can also be used as an appetite suppressant.  Juniper has been used in spiritual practices throughout history, in many different cultures, from Tibet to North America, and is often used in blends for meditation.  It should be avoided during pregnancy, around babies and by those with kidney disease.
