Lavender oil - A natural remedy for the body and mind

Lavender oil is a multipurpose aromatherapy oil that has numerous therapeutic qualities for both physical and emotional conditions.  Pure lavender essential oil is an invaluable part of a natural first aid kit, and is one of the few aromatherapy essential oils that can be applied neat to the skin.  Lavender can be used undiluted to relieve the pain of insect bites and stings, burns and spots.  This powerful plant essence is cytophylactic, which means it has properties that can stimulate the growth of new cells.  For this reason, this is a beneficial oil to help heal cuts and grazes, as well as being a useful ingredient in aromatherapy skin care products to help combat the appearance of wrinkles.

Lavender oil is widely used in essential oil burners not just to add fragrance to a room, but to help induce feelings of calm and to reduce anxiety.  Like several other therapeutic grade essential oils, such as frankincense oil, lavender has anti-depressant properties.  When vaporized in a diffuser, it can help ease the symptoms of migraines, nervous tension and insomnia, promoting deep sleep.  When inhaled, the powerful aroma molecules also have various decongestant, detoxifying and restorative qualities.

Lavender can be used on its own or in essential oil blends in aromatherapy massage oils to assist in easing the discomfort of a variety of physical disorders.  Massaged onto the skin in a carrier oil, lavender is used by aromatherapists to treat menstrual cramps and digestive disorders.  There are several species of lavender that are used to make high quality essential oils, which can be distinguished by their botanical names.  Lavandula officinalis is commonly available.  Another widely used oil is spike lavender, lavandula latfolia, which has a strong fragrance and is particularly good for respiratory conditions.  Lavender aromatherapy oils should be avoided in early pregnancy or all together if there's a history of miscarriage.
