Lemongrass essential oil - A zesty and uplifting fragrance

Lemongrass essential oil, known in Latin as cymbopogon citratus or c. flexuosus, has a strong lemony scent that has a number of benefits in physical and emotional healing.  Lemongrass oil has mild disinfectant and antiseptic properties.  Diluted in a carrier oil it can be used to treat fungal conditions.  This pure essential oil has beneficial detoxifying and toning qualities, so can be a useful ingredient in aromatherapy skin care products, such as those used to reduce the appearance of cellulite or to soothe congested skin.

Lemongrass essential oil has a zesty aroma that smells similar to fresh lemons.  Used in an aromatherapy oil burner or in a scented candle, it can be used as a natural air freshener in the home.  Lemongrass can also be used as an effective insect repellent.  In a clay pot aromatherapy diffuser it can be used to freshen the air in a car and create a calming atmosphere.  It's powerful lemony fragrance can be uplifting and balancing.  It can be a refreshing oil to use in a bath, though only a few drops are needed as this essential oil can cause irritation to sensitive skin.

If being used on the skin, such as in an aromatherapy massage oil or bug repellent roll on stick, lemongrass should be well diluted in a base oil.  Aromatherapists advise against using lemongrass on the face or body if the skin is going to be exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet rays.  This therapeutic grade essential oil works well in blends with other citrus oils, including mandarin and orange.  There are also numerous recipes that combine it with lavender, rosemary of frankincense oil, among many others.
