Peppermint essential oil - Refreshing and reviving!

Peppermint essential oil, also known by its Latin botanical name mentha pierita, has many healing aromatherapy benefits for both the body and mind.  Peppermint oil has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful ingredient in aromatherapy skin care products.  Diluted in a carrier oil, peppermint can be good for acne, dermatitis and oily skin, as well as ringworm and scabies.  In an aromatherapy massage oil, this fragrant oil can help ease aching muscles and relieve symptoms of anxiety, including tension headaches.

Inhalation is another method commonly used to absorb the therapeutic aroma molecules into the bloodstream.  Aromatherapy diffusers, such as oil burners, nebulizers or porous clay pots, are widely available at inexpensive prices.  When inhaled, peppermint essential oil not only gives off a refreshing minty fragrance, but it's also a powerful natural decongestant and expectorant that can help clear the sinuses, ease coughs, catarrh and sore throats.  Peppermint pure essential oil can also help stimulate the mind and aid in concentration.  A few drops added to a handkerchief or tissue can be useful for a quick lift.

Peppermint has many more healing properties and is beneficial for a variety of symptoms.  A few drops of peppermint essential oil added to a bath can work wonders for dissipating feelings of nausea, relieving the discomfort of indigestion, flatulence and stomach cramps, and helping to combat diarrhea.  Peppermint aromatherapy oil can be a useful plant essence to carry as part of a first aid kit when traveling.  This minty fresh fragrance can help prevent travel sickness and can work as a natural insect repellent.  Diluted, it can be used as a mouthwash to freshen breath and ease toothache, though it must not be swallowed.  Like several therapeutic grade essential oils, peppermint should be avoided during the first three months of pregnancy and by those using homeopathic medicines.
