Peppermint oil - The refreshing minty aroma revives and stimulates
Peppermint oil, known in Latin as mentha piperita, has a multitude of uses and is used by aromatherapists for a broad range of physical conditions. This pure plant essence has a fresh minty aroma. As well as being refreshing, the fragrance of peppermint essential oil has astringent, anti-viral and antiseptic qualities. When inhaled, this aromatherapy oil can work wonders at relieving the symptoms of coughs and colds, working as a natural decongestant. Diluted with a carrier oil it can be rubbed on the chest to ease chest infections.
Used in an aromatherapy diffuser to release the aroma molecules, such as an oil burner or candle, peppermint oil can help reduce nervous stress and mental fatigue. A few drops of this therapeutic grade essential oil on a tissue or in a clay pot diffuser can be helpful when traveling, to help prevent travel sickness and nausea. Oil of peppermint can be used in a bath or in an aromatherapy massage oil to treat indigestion, flatulence and stomach cramps, as well as neuralgia and colic. However, this pure essential oil is very powerful and aromatherapists recommend it's avoided during pregnancy, as well as by those taking homeopathic remedies.
Peppermint oil can sometimes cause irritation, so should always be diluted well in skin care products. Aromatherapy carrier oils are used for the safe application of theraputic essential oils to the skin. Peppermint is used by aromatherapists in cases of dermatitis, ringworm and scabies. It can also be beneficial in a face cream to soothe oily skin or acne. Peppermint is often used in blends with other aromatherapy essential oils to create soothing and stimulating massage oils, helping ease tired muscles and get rid of tension headaches. Diluted it can be used a mouthwash to combat bad breath, but this essential oil should never be swallowed or taken internally.
